Student Parliament
The Role of the Student Parliament is:
“…to grant all students currently at Wolverhampton Grammar School a voice in a democratically elected body which is capable of coordinating and directing an appropriate response. The Parliament is also a means through which the staff can liaise with the student body and gauge popular opinion.”
The Student Parliament – an idea pioneered by former Head, Dr. Bernard Trafford - is responsible for the representation of the views of the entire student body at WGS. It is an open forum, designed not only to resolve grievances but also to connect the year groups and unite the school. That said, it maintains its roots, being the main discussion area for students to bring up their ideas and concerns with a view to pursue both.
The Student Parliament’s role is to ensure that both the students and staff of WGS have the opportunity to have their voices heard in an elected body, designed to serve the interests of the entire school.

Alistair Macaulay (Chair)
Hi, I'm Alistair Macaulay, and I've chaired student parliament for two years now. I also represent the students on the Governors' committee, putting across the students' point of view. I'm now in the Upper Sixth, but I chaired my first meetings during the upper years' study leave when I was in Year 8. I'm a bit more confident now!
Aran Batth (Secretary)
Hi, I’m Aran, I’ve been a part of student parliament every year I’ve been at WGS (I’m now in Upper Sixth) and am the secretary. In some ways you could call me the backbone of student parliament, I write minutes weekly (following up our meetings), arrange meetings with all the different offices up and down the school and make sure the students points are heard and followed up! I have time to do other things too; I learn sign language, sing in the choir, teach French to Year 10 and am a peer supporter.
Paawan Sharma (IT Rep')
I'm Paawan Sharma, WGS Student Parliament's IT rep. I address all issues which relate to the school network and to the computers and printers around school. I also take questions to the school's ICT department and report back to parliament. Outside of parliament, I help in running Maths Club (a club for students of the lower school). I am also involved in Greek Club.
Fiona Jones (Sports Rep')
Hi, I'm Fiona and I am the Sports Representative for Student Parliament. My job is to take any points about sport to the sports staff and bring their answers and suggestions back to the meeting. In my spare time at school I play trombone in Senior Concert Band, I am a member of Senior Choir and I also sing in Bella a Capella. With regards to sport, I am captain of the 2nd netball team and I also play tennis, go to circuits in the morning and sometimes attend running club.
Ed Holden (Food Rep'/Chair of Development Committee)
My job as food rep is to take the (few and far between) gripes from the students to both Mrs Taylor (head of catering) and the kitchen staff in general, these points have varied from staff/pupil relationships to potato smiley faces in the tuck shop, this is my first year as food rep and second year as chair of development committee. This comes on top of my responsibilities as captain of the rugby team and choir membership.
Elizabeth Bamford (Development Committee Secretary)
I am the secretary of Development Committee which looks at the school’s Development Plan and attempts to make changes where we think we can make a positive impact. I am also on the Wolverhampton Youth Council, representing the school and its views at a local level. I relax in my spare time by doing archery in the glorious sunshine of a spring day (at least that’s the plan).
