End of term is just champion for WGS
Wolverhampton Grammar School had plenty of reasons to celebrate the end of term this year, as its sports teams notched up yet more notable victories.
WGS’s U12 cricketers won the Staffordshire County Championship, beating Denstone College on their own ground. Victory in the final meant that the U12s had won every match they played in this season. In athletics, the Year 7 girls’ won the City championships, with Years 8, 9 and 10 all finishing as runners up. WGS’s girls’ did equally well in tennis, claiming victory in the Year 7 City doubles tournament, whilst the boys’ claimed the Year 10 doubles title.
WGS’s rounders teams capped an incredible season with Years’ 7 and 10 winning City titles. The U16 squad went even further, winning the City title before qualifying for the National Championships held in Northampton. Competing against 23 teams from around the UK, the WGS girls reached the quarter final stages, eventually finishing seventh in the country.
“It was the first time WGS has reached the national championships and the girls performed superbly,” comments Kathy Munden, PE teacher and coach to the U16 squad. “To finish the season ranked seventh in the country is a huge achievement and something of which the entire squad can be extremely proud.”
Summing up the season WGS’s head, Vincent Darby comments: “This has been a truly remarkable season for WGS’s sports men and women. We have won over 50 titles in sports ranging from Fives to football.
“As this school year comes to an end, our students can look back on their achievements – and a rather full trophy cabinet - with a sense of real pride. Well done to them all.”
