Governors and staff
- Vincent Darby (Head)
Vincent attended grammar school in his home town of Birmingham before and studying History at Lancaster University. The world of high finance beckoned, but lasted only one year, before he joined King Edward VI Aston School as a teacher of History and Games in 1978. After 24 years at Aston (twelve as Deputy Head) Vincent was appointed Head at King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys, where he spent six highly successful years. Given that Camp Hill is one of the best state schools in the country, it took something very special to lure Vincent away and WGS proved to be just that. Appointed as Head of WGS in September 2008, Vincent is looking forward to leading the school as it moves towards its 500th anniversary in 2012.
- Peter Hills (Deputy Head)
Peter is responsible for Admissions and Pastoral care. He was formerly Head of Lower School for some 14 years and Head of Middle School for two years after that. A keen sportsman, Peter continues to contribute to the extra curriculum life of WGS through running cricket and football teams’. Peter himself plays hockey (and, until recently, cricket) for the Old Wulfrunians and says he considers himself very fortunate to work in such a wonderful school.
- Nic Anderson (Deputy Head)
Nic has been associated with WGS since 1983, first as a student then from 1997 as a teacher within the Maths department. He teaches from Big Six through to A Level Further Maths. Nic was Head of Lower School for four years until September 2009 when he was appointed Deputy Head with a responsibility for curriculum. Nic is a keen hockey player and continues to work with boys’ hockey teams at all levels.
- Mark Benfield (Head of Sixth Form)
Mark Benfield has been at WGS since 1988, where he started in the English Department, and he is now in his twelfth year as Head of Sixth Form. This role involves overseeing the academic and pastoral progress of all sixth formers, as well as co-ordinating and guiding university entrance through the UCAS system. He still teaches English across the full age spectrum within school, including Big Six, and maintains (just!) a link with the sports department by jointly running the school’s 2nd XI football team, and in helping with cricket in the summer. Away from WGS, he is a senior examiner in English Literature for the OCR exam board.
- Val Fogarty (Head of Year 10 & 11)
Val has been with the school for 17 years and joined the Senior Management Team four years ago with a specific responsibility for pastoral care and equal opportunities. Val is the peer support and Ugandan link coordinator and is responsible for the academic and pastoral well being of all students in Years 10 and 11. In her spare time Val enjoys painting watercolours and watching sport, especially football.
- Ian Tyler (Director of OpAL)
The roles of Director of the OpAL Programme, Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator and Assistant Head for Teaching and Learning comprise a very wide brief which shares responsibility across the school for the full range of learners and teaching at WGS. Consequently he works closely with specialist teachers in OpAL, with the rest of the teaching staff and with fellow senior staff to ensure that both students and teachers are confident and well supported within the school. This post is both an academic and pastoral, involving liaising with staff, students and parents. As Director of Drama he is responsible for A Level Theatre Studies and actively involved in producing an extra-curricular theatre programme that involves five productions per year.
