Charity begins cross-country
Staff and students at Wolverhampton Grammar School are recovering after running the entire width of the country in a 24 hour marathon which they hope will raise thousands of pounds for a local charity.
The Coast 2 Coast 24 hour run is an annual event organised by staff and students at Wolverhampton Grammar School. This year’s event saw a team of ten Year 10 students run non stop from St Bee’s Head in Cumbria to Robin Hood’s Bay in Yorkshire over the Bank Holiday weekend of the 29th – 30th May.
Last year Coast 2 Coast raised almost £8000 for two charities, the Lymphoma Research Trust and the Midlands Air Ambulance. The money was raised through a combination of sponsorships and support from local organisations.
This year’s event will support Compton Hospice. “Coast to Coast is one of the highlights of the year for the students who take part in it,” explains Mrs. Ward, one of the organisers of this year’s event. “It is hard work, but it is certainly worth it, not only for those who take part, but for the charities they are supporting.
“The ten students work hard, not only in training for the run itself, but in helping to raise money for the good causes,” continues Kate Ward. “The experience of taking part in the annual Coast 2 Coast event is something that stays with these young people for the rest of their lives,” she concludes.
