WGS punches above its weight to achieve success
Wolverhampton Grammar School has won an incredible 45 individual and team titles in sports including football, netball, rugby, Fives, gymnastics and cross country so far this season. In addition, several of its students have been rewarded for their endeavour with county and national honours.
“The 2009 / 10 season has been a remarkable one for WGS’s sporting teams so far and we are all immensely proud of their achievements,” comments head, Mr. Darby. “Our netballers swept all before them in the City Championships with Years' 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 winning their age group finals, whilst our sixth formers achieved a double triumph with both its A and B teams winning titles.
“In gymnastics, WGS fielded one of the strongest teams at this year’s City Gymnastics Championships, and as a result came away with a remarkable haul of 30 medals including six gold. Our youngsters did equally well at the U10 Championships coming away with two gold, a silver and a bronze medal.” “Our U12 and U19 footballers finished the season as city champions; both teams winning their respective final against St Peter’s, 2- 1. Victory was particularly significant for the U19s as it is the third year in a row they have won the trophy, a unique feat in this competition.
“Hockey continues to flourish with five WGS players gaining honours at county level this season, whilst sixth former Nick Bandurak, who has already represented England at U16 level , looks set for even greater honours. And despite not being a ‘traditional rugby school’ WGS made great strides by winning the Plate at the prestigious Marches Sevens Competition held this year at Hereford Cathedral School.”
Summing up the season so far, Mr. Darby concludes: “With individual and team medals also being won in cross country and a resurgence in Eton Fives, this has been a truly remarkable season for WGS’s sports men and women.
“As a relatively small school of just 650 students, you could say when it comes to sport, WGS really does punch above its weight.”
