Application procedure

Our process of selection and admissions is designed to confirm that applicants have the potential to cope with a fast-paced and challenging curriculum.  The whole process aims to put children at their ease and to asses both what they can do and what they might do given the opportunities that WGS would afford them.

Following the entrance test. we invite a small number of candidates for interview.  Children are called for interview for one of several reasons.  They may be being considered for a scholarship; they may be borderline; or they may be one of a random selection of children interviewed to test  the effectiveness of the school's entrance tests. 

Children who are successful in the entrance test will be offered a place at the end of January.  If you child
has been awarded a scholarship you will be notified at the same time.

The school strives to set and maintain a constant academic standard of entry.  There is no quota system, nor any minimum or maximum number of places to be offered, though late applicants  may not be able to be considered if the available places are already full.

Applying to WGS
To register for a place at Wolverhampton Grammar School you should complete the relevant application form and return it to the admissions department. As there is a considerable amount of administration involved in the application procedure, we charge a small registration fee of £25. This is non-refundable. Please send the registration fee with your form as we are unable to register your application until the registration fee is received.


2011 Entry
The entrance test for entry in September 2011 is Saturday 22nd January.

Every applicant applying during the normal recruitment season and process who is judged to have the potential to cope and thrive at WGS is offered a place. Late applications are considered in light of places still available.
