Fees and scholarships
BIG SIX
The annual Big Six fees for the academic year 2009/10 are £7939.00 (this fee includes the cost of the week’s residential course in North Wales which takes place in January). Those who choose to pay termly will therefore pay three times £2645.00. Payment can also be made by monthly Direct Debit (see below).
OpAL at Big Six
OpAL programme costs are an additional term’s fees per annum. This additional charge is to meet the cost of the intensive small-group teaching that OpAL students receive to help them with their Specific Learning Difficulty.
This fee applies to your child’s first four years in school. When your child embarks on his or her GCSE or A Level course, we will reassess the level of individual need. At this point, the school can usually reduce the additional charge to 50 percent of one term’s fee as the amount of extra help diminishes.
Bursaries and Scholarships
There are no academic scholarships or Governors’ bursaries available for Big Six applicants; but by sitting the same entrance test as external candidates in the January of the Big Six year, they can compete on level terms for scholarships and bursaries for Year 7 at WGS.

Governors’ Bursaries
The status of WGS may have changed several times over its long history, but it has always been proud of its standing in the community; that is why as an independent school, it still works hard to maintain a robust bursary fund.
Governors’ Bursaries are awarded to those children who we think show potential to make a positive contribution to the school. Dependent on funds, there are a number of bursary awards available to support families who could not otherwise afford a place at the school. The awards vary according to the level of family income. To be considered for a bursary your household income should not exceed £60,000 per annum.
The school strives to help as many families as possible but as funds are limited, unfortunately we cannot help all those who apply. Candidates who satisfy the school’s entry requirements but are not fortunate enough to win a bursary, will still be offered a full fee-paying place nonetheless.
Scholarships
We offer Governors’ Academic Scholarships to the children who score most highly in the entrance test. There are eight academic scholarships given at 11+ each worth 25 percent of the annual school fee. Academic scholarships are awarded regardless of family income.
We also award one music scholarship to a student coming to the school at 11+ or 13+. The scholarship provides 25 percent remission of the school fees plus free music tuition on the instrument of your child’s choice. Students who are awarded music scholarships must still pass the school’s entrance test and should either be working towards, or have Grade 5 in their chosen instrument. Music scholars are expected to make a significant contribution to musical life whilst they are at the school.

Scholarships
A number of scholarships are awarded to students joining the Sixth Form:
Governors’ Academic Scholarships
Two Governors’ Academic Scholarships are awarded to students entering the Sixth Form. As
they are awarded on a competitive basis, applicants for academic scholarships will need to attain
a higher standard at GCSE than the standard entry requirements (normally at least 6
A*/A grades). Each academic scholarship is worth 25 percent of the annual school fee.
Governors’ Music Awards
We award one music scholarship to a student joining the Sixth Form. The scholarship provides 25
percent remission of the school fees plus free music tuition on the instrument of your choice.
Students who are awarded music scholarships must still meet the sixth form academic entrance
requirements and should be working at Grade 6 standard or higher (and should be looking to reach
Grade 8 standard in the Sixth Form). Music scholars are expected to make a significant
contribution to musical life whilst they are at the school.
Ogden Trust Science Scholarship
Thanks to the generous support of the Ogden Trust we are sometimes able to offer a scholarship
to a student transferring to Wolverhampton Grammar School from the maintained (state) sector to
study physics and/or Mathematics amongst his or her A Levels (with a priority given to those
studying both subjects). A scholarship includes helps towards uniform and travel costs. The level
of award may vary according to family income but no award will be made if your family income is
over £60,000. The Ogden Trust will require proof of income prior to any award being made.
Applicants for scholarships will be interviewed. Other applicants may be asked for interview depending on the reference received from their school or college.

Monthly payment of fees
Wolverhampton Grammar School operates a monthly payment scheme for the payment of fees. This is in order to assist parents in spreading the cost of their child’s education over the year at no additional cost.
The scheme is used for the payment of academic tuition fees; extras such as lunches, daily travel, fees insurance and music tuition can also be included. The total annual costs will therefore be paid by way of direct debit in twelve equal instalments. This scheme is open to all parents.
Parents with more than one child in school should note that a separate direct debit will be required for each child.
Direct Debit applications forms are available on request from Mr. Stuart Cohen Finance Manager (01902 712060), who is also able to answer any questions parents may have on the operation of the scheme. Payments normally commence in September of each year. However, it will be possible in certain cases for direct debit payment to begin at other points during the year.
