Sport

There is a long tradition of sporting achievement at WGS. The sporting heritage of the school is such that sport is valued not only for its own sake, but for what it can teach in terms of respect for self and others, determination, team building and self belief.

As a coeducational school, WGS offers more than 20 sports based activities through curricular and extra – curricular provision. A ‘can do’ attitude based on active participation pervades, and each student is encouraged to try their hand at sports they may not have previously had the opportunity to experience and to persevere with activities that prove ‘challenging’.

The department believes in the ethos of Sport For All in that each student deserves the opportunity to:  achieve his/her potential regardless of ability, experience activity, and develop health awareness so that a fit and healthy life can be enjoyed post-school.

Sport is offered at all ages from Big Six, through to the Sixth Form where Physical Education remains a popular A Level choice. WGS PE staff are committed and successful sports men and women themselves, often specialising in a particular discipline, through which they are able to provide dedicated coaching to students looking to focus on a particular sport.

Facilities
The department is located in WGS’s extensive sports centre; an impressive building that incorporates a large indoor playing area suitable for a wide array of activities, four squash courts, a multi-gym and a bespoke boulder climbing wall providing a unique experience for our students wishing to look beyond the more traditional sports.

As a long established grammar school, WGS also offers ‘Fives’:  a combination of squash and handball, Fives has its roots in the public school system and in recent years has experienced  something of a resurgence amongst current and former students.

Out of doors, WGS is fortunate to benefit from a 23 acre campus which incorporates extensive sports fields for football, rugby, rounders, athletics and softball. There are also three netball courts and a large floodlit Astroturf facility for hockey and tennis.

Activities included in the curriculum range from the traditional games activities of cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and rugby through to athletics, gymnastics, swimming and racket sports. With each child of compulsory school age experiencing an afternoon of games alongside a PE session every week , we believe WGS has a very healthy student population.

Extra curricular sport thrives at WGS. Each year group is offered the opportunity for competitive sports and all age groups regularly compete against local schools as well as an extensive network of independent schools throughout the region and, on occasion, country. The pursuit of excellence is an integral part of life at Wolverhampton Grammar School and the department recognises its responsibility in encouraging participation at the highest level (though not at the expense of the less able).

This busy programme of competition has led to a successful track record for WGS sport over the years, a tradition which continues to the present day. With a significant number of teams and individuals having experienced success at local, county, regional and national levels, we have many achievements to be proud of.
