Year 7
The majority of children join WGS in Year 7, at age 11. This transition from junior to secondary school is made easier by means of induction sessions and the close care provided by the Head of Year and form tutors. WGS also operates a buddying system whereby senior students keep a watchful eye on 'newcomers' in the early weeks.
In truth, the move to secondary school is an exciting adventure for most new students - and we try to make sure that what happens in the classroom is similarly an adventure in learning.
Selection
Admission to the school is via entrance test with papers in English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning. The entrance test is designed to confirm that students have the potential to cope with a fast-paced and challenging curriculum. The whole process aims to put children at their ease and to assess both what they can do and what they might achieve given the opportunities that WGS would afford them.
The school strives to set and maintain a constant academic standard of entry however there is no quota system, nor any minimum or maximum number of places to be offered.
Children who are successful in the entrance test will be offered a place at the end of January. If your child has been awarded a scholarship you will be notified at the same time.

OpAL
Opportunities through Assisted Learning (OpAL) is our specialist programme aimed at supporting bright students with dyslexia.
There are two routes of entry into the OpAL Programme: by our standard entrance test or by interview. Once you have registered your child for the OpAL Programme, the Programme Director will discuss with you the options of sitting the entrance test or being assessed for admission by interview. In accordance with SENDA (2001), all candidates assessed as dyslexic receive extra time in the entrance examination. To register your child for the OpAL Programme, you will need to provide a recent report from an Educational Psychologist and the name and address of any teacher who has given your child specialist teaching in the last two years.
