The 1990 Reunion - 20 years on!

On the afternoon of 24th April, almost seventy former students and staff came back to WGS to mark the 20th anniversary of leaving school.

Members of the 'class 1990' came from the far flung corners of the globe (and Tettenhall) to reminisce and wonder where on earth the last 20 years went!

A review of the day's events has been promised, so please keep a look out for that. But in the meantime, go to our gallery page to see a selection of photographs kindly sent in by Emma Heath.

OW Sports Festival
The latest OW Sports Festival held on Saturday 12th September was another great success. Footballers, netballers and hockey players past and present along with their families and friends came together on a gloriously sunny Saturday to catch up on old times and to relive the magic of playing together as a team once more.

And despite the passing of years (for the staff team at least), the standard was a high as ever! The day ended with a superb meal in Big School and for those who could stand the pace, the night life of Wolverhampton  beckoned, ensuring that for one night only, the centre of Wolverhampton was awash with OWs. A glorious sight indeed!

For those of you who are not sure about the origins of the Festival, here is a little bit of the history behind it.

It all began with a request by one of our former 1st XI football teams to return to school to play on Moreton's Piece (I am ashamed to admit that I cannot remember the exact year), and the school was happy to oblige. Such was the success that another team wanted to join the party the following year, along with a school side and a staff side. It has since grown into an annual tournament with around 12 teams participating.

It is now called the Richard Wright Memorial tournament in honour of one of life's absolute gentlemen. Richard was a pilot in the RAF and such was his commitment to the tournament he was known to fly in from the Gulf and park his jet at Cosford for the weekend. However, in 1997, Richard died tragically in a mid air collision. His team are commited to keeping the tournament alive in his memory and the school is honoured to be the host.

The football tournament was won this year by the chocolate-shirted team made up of the leavers of 2002, who as a 1st XI had a great chance of winning the national independent schools cup. The staff team were of course one of the elegant teams, with Steve Essex, magnificent.

It is an important factor that girls are now involved, as it reflects the school as it currently operates and with netball and hockey now an integral part of the day hopefully the festival will continue to grow.

The dinner in the evening is a celebration of what the school has always stood for, producing talented students that make the world a better place. With the Big Band now part of the celebrations, the occasion is a joy to be part of and long may it last.

You will not receive any personal calls from the school regarding the tournament (we always post information on the school's website). The main reason being is that we hope it will mean you always keep in touch with each other directly and although I realise that as we all get older and the further away you live travelling back to WGS becomes more and more of a challenge, but for that one weekend I would ask you all to make it a priority. The OW Sports Festival is a unique occasion, that we hope will be maintained, and treasured for many years to come.
