Guess the Job, Aspire lesson

Year 7 become career detectives

At Wolverhampton Grammar School, we believe it is never too early for students to start exploring the exciting range of opportunities that the future may hold.

As part of National Careers Week, our Year 7 students became career detectives during an engaging “Guess the Job” Aspire lesson, designed to spark curiosity, challenge stereotypes and introduce students to a wide range of professions.

Six professionals took to the stage with one important twist — they weren’t allowed to speak. Instead, students had to rely on clues, observation and teamwork to work out each person’s career before the roles were revealed.

This fun and interactive challenge encouraged students to:

  • Explore a variety of career pathways
  • Challenge stereotypes surrounding different professions
  • Practise professional etiquette while networking

Once the guessing was complete, students met our guests in small carousel groups where they asked thoughtful and insightful questions about qualifications, career journeys and the realities of working in each field.

The panel included a Senior Quantity Surveyor, Victorian Demonstrator, Veterinary Surgeon, RAF Flight Lieutenant working in Counterterrorism, Neuroscientist, and RAF Chief Information Security Officer. From unusual job titles to fascinating career stories, students approached the conversations with curiosity, confidence and impressive professionalism.

A huge thank you to our wonderful Old Wulfrunians and professional guests who generously gave their time to inspire our students. Experiences like this help young people broaden their horizons, think ambitiously about their futures and begin to understand the many pathways open to them.
