A priority from the start

At Wolverhampton Grammar School we pride ourselves on offering the best pastoral care possible. Looking after every individual is key to the ethos of our School.

Our diverse community is celebrated, and we want all students to feel at home and proud of who they are. We all work together to foster a sense of community and belonging at WGS.

From the start of Wolverhampton Grammar Junior School pastoral care is a priority. We are a busy, happy and successful community. Our children’s learning, development and welfare are at the heart of everything we do. Click on the button below to read more about support in the Junior School.

Support for fellow students

Peer Support from students in the Sixth Form provides valuable help for students who for whatever reason feel unhappy or under pressure with school work.

Your child will never feel alone at our School. We make sure every child gets the care and individual attention that they need.

Additional support channels

The School is unique with a real sense of family and community. From the outset, I can see that the pupils are happy, polite and confident. To support such students…is an important and integral part of my role.

Mrs Abbi, School Counsellor

We also have a School App called ‘toot-toot’ where students can reach out anonymously for help.

Our on-site professional Counsellor, Mrs Abbi is available to provide more formal one-to-one support if required. She also runs group workshops on topics requested by students such as building self-confidence, self-esteem, and assertiveness.

Senior school students all have 2 dedicated tutors who they see twice a day and whose primary responsibility is to care for their tutees; to provide support and guidance and build positive, strong relationships within the tutor group.

Wellbeing Curriculum

Our Wellbeing Curriculum incorporates the statutory subjects of PSHE and RSE, helping students to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes that they will need to help them thrive.

Senior House System

The Senior House system which is at the centre of school life further enhances the School’s outstanding pastoral care, enabling students to build relationships across year-groups.

The House tutor and Co-tutor remain with the student from Year 8 through to Upper Sixth providing continuity of support and care.

Diverse Community

Looking after every individual is key to the ethos of our School. Our diverse community is celebrated, and we want all students to feel at home and proud of who they are.

Wellbeing Team

The WGS Wellbeing team are always on hand to chat and offer daily drop-in sessions in the centrally located Wellbeing Hub and garden, located in the tranquil vicinity of the Jenyns Library.

We are proud to be one of the oldest schools in the country but forward-looking in our approach.

Children thrive under our exceptional pastoral care, award-winning leadership and outstanding learning opportunities. Class sizes are deliberately small and classrooms are bright and airy, creating a wonderful learning environment for all.

Ages 11 – 16

Many new students join us in Year 7 and benefit from a full induction ahead of starting. The House system from Year 8 upwards is an extension of our pastoral care and central to school life. Our students consistently perform well in GCSE and A Level examinations and we are extremely proud of them.

Ages 16 – 18

As young adults, our Sixth Formers enjoy studying and socialising in their own Sixth Form Centre, bringing with it greater independence, support from the Sixth Form team and House tutors, the advantages of small teaching groups, and the opportunity to take on leadership and volunteer roles.
