On Friday, 10th July, Wolverhampton Grammar School was delighted to welcome renowned space scientist, author and BBC presenter of The Sky at Night, Dame Dr Maggie Aderin, for a truly inspiring event with our students and local schools.
During her visit to Big School, Dame Dr Maggie shared highlights from her remarkable career in science, reflecting on her passion for space and astronomy while encouraging students to pursue their own ambitions with curiosity and determination.
Students were captivated by Dame Dr Maggie’s fascinating insights into her work on major space projects, including the James Webb and Gemini telescopes, as well as her experiences communicating the wonders of science to audiences around the world. Her message was clear: never stop asking questions and never give up on your dreams.
An important part of the event focused on Dame Dr Maggie’s experience as a neurodiverse scientist. She spoke openly about how this has shaped her journey, demonstrating that thinking differently has been one of her greatest strengths. Her honesty and resilience provided an inspiring reminder that challenges can become opportunities and that there is no single path to success.

The visit also marked the launch of Dame Dr Maggie’s memoir, Starchild, for our students. In this warm and deeply personal memoir, she reflects on her experiences of education, overcoming prejudice, balancing family life and building an extraordinary career in science. From being the only Black woman on her physics course at Imperial College London to becoming one of the UK’s most recognisable science communicators, Starchild is a powerful story of perseverance, ambition and believing in yourself.
We were also delighted to welcome Old Wulfrunian Jaipal (Class of 2024), who joined the event in support of Dame Dr Maggie’s visit. Now studying Physics at the University of Birmingham, Jaipal is an excellent role model for our students and a wonderful example of where a passion for science can lead.
Events like this play an important role in inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators. We are incredibly grateful to Dame Dr Maggie Aderin for sharing her experiences with our students, and for encouraging them to look to the stars with confidence and ambition.
Thank you also to Merchant Taylors’ Foundation for gifting hundreds of copies of ‘Dr Maggie’s Grand Tour of the Solar System’ to children in attendance.
