Coast 2 Coast 2026 Challenge in just 24 hours

WGS students complete incredible Coast 2 Coast Challenge in just 24 hours

Wolverhampton Grammar School’s annual Coast to Coast Challenge has once again showcased the determination and spirit of our Year 10 students, as this year’s team successfully completed the 170-mile relay from St Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay in an incredible 24 hours and 27 minutes.

The Coast 2 Coast challenge has been a proud WGS tradition for more than 25 years, with students taking on the demanding route across the country after 16 weeks of intensive preparation and training. Supported by dedicated members of staff and encouraged by families along the route, the challenge continues to be one of the most inspiring events in the school calendar.

The atmosphere when the team set off from WGS was filled with excitement as friends, families and loved ones gathered to wish the team well before they began their remarkable journey in support of The Good Shepherd. One of the most heartwarming moments came from our Reception and Year 1 pupils, who proudly waved the team off with handmade banners to cheer the runners on. Many shared how inspired they were by the students and hoped to take part in the challenge themselves one day.

This year’s team — Bobby, Louis, Gur-Mehar, Mason, Arjun, Charlie, Sebastian, Roopen, Hattie, Amber-Rose and Bea — set off from St Bees at 7am on Saturday 23rd May 2026, determined to reach Robin Hood’s Bay within 24 hours.

Upon starting the challenge and pushing themselves through the day and night, the team officially completed the challenge in 24 hours and 27 minutes, an extraordinary achievement made possible through teamwork and perseverance from every single runner involved.

A huge thank you also goes to the teachers and families who supported the students every step of the way. Their encouragement throughout the challenge meant so much to the team and played an important role in helping them reach the finish line.

Alongside the personal achievement of completing the challenge, the students also used the event to raise money for The Good Shepherd, a Wolverhampton-based charity that has supported disadvantaged people in the city for more than 50 years. The charity works to end homelessness, support recovery and create pathways out of poverty through crisis support, food provision and practical interventions. We are delighted to share that the team raised an incredible £7,689 for the charity through their efforts.

We could not be prouder of this incredible group of students and everything they have achieved.
